Art in Goa? Azulejos!
Goa, the tropical
favourite destination would only want me to pack my bags and go for summer tan
vacation. Reminds me of the warm sands. Silver seas. Salty air. Sun-kissed hair.
Sexy summer. Take me there.
I would not have ever imaged Goa with Art. India known for
its art and culture at various cities rooted with its traditions; little did I know
about Goa having its own art form too called Azulejos. It has its original
influence from Portuguese, sadly this beautiful art is listed among one of the
dying arts of India. Wondering on how this beauty has not been known much about,
talked about and is yet constrained within the borders of Goa.
When you next walk through the streets of the Panjim in Goa,
you would see the nameplates outside every door, and would know exactly what I’m
mentioning about. This art form is a painting with Portugal typography and motifs
(the design form) done over ceramic tiles. Nevertheless, very interestingly the
Goans have used this art in creative manners other than the original way of
having it for nameplates. Less noticed, you will also see them being used at
the Goan resorts, to let you feel the aura of being at Goa.
So the next time you tour to Goa and see these paintings on
tiles across the streets, Azulejos is definitely a must buy in your souvenir
list!
